Who Does What?

Planning a wedding is a busy time and is full of drama and excitement. However it can also be a stressful time for the couple and therefore it is sometimes best to ask for help from those friends and family close to you who are more than happy to help, that way you can concentrate on the things that matter to you and reduce the amount of stress you are under.

Below is a guide for the traditional roles of who does what:

The Bride:Bride

  • Chooses the wedding date
  • Chooses the type of ceremony and theme of wedding
  • Chooses her Bridesmaids and Chief Bridesmaid
  • Chooses her Bridal Gown, Bridesmaids outfits and accessories
  • Advises other members of the bridal party on dress codes, outfits, and colour themes

  • Works out the Budget
  • Takes care of all legal aspects of the ceremony
  • Sorts out documentation and finances
  • Buys the Wedding Rings
  • Chooses the best man and ushers
  • Arranges the outfits for the male members of the bridal party
  • Arranges the wedding night accommodation and honeymoon (which in keeping with tradition is kept secret from the bride)
  • Pays for the flowers
  • Buys gifts for the best man, bridesmaids and ushers
  • Arrives at the ceremony before the bride
  • Received guests in the receiving line at the wedding reception
  • Makes a speech at the reception on behalf of himself and his new wife, thanking all involved especially the bridesmaids

    The Best Man:

  • Helps the Bridegroom choose the outfits of the male bridal partyGroomsmen
  • Arranges the stag party
  • Meets with the ushers to sort seating and parking arrangements
  • Attends the wedding rehearsal
  • Collects outfits for himself and the bridegroom
  • Collects cards and messages from those who cannot attend the wedding
  • Collects buttonholes and ensures all members of bridal party are wearing them
  • Ensures ushers have order of service sheets to hand out to guests
  • Helps the bridegroom dress on the morning of the service and makes sure he gets to the church on time
  • On behalf of the bridegroom pays the church fees, tips and bell ringers fees
  • Produces rings when required and hands them to the bridegroom or officiate
  • Escorts the chief bridesmaid from the ceremony
  • With the help of the ushers makes sure all guests have transport to the reception
  • Announces events such as speeches and cutting of the cake, in the absence of a toast master or master of ceremonies
  • Makes a speech and reads out cards from well wishers who are unable to attend
  • Decorates the going away car
  • Helps transport wedding gifts to a safe place
  • After the wedding returns his outfit and the bridegrooms outfit to hire services if necessary

    The Chief Bridesmaid:

  • Helps the bride in choosing her bridal gown and accessories
  • Helps choose the outfits and accessories for the bridesmaids
  • Arranges the Hen party
  • Helps bride keep wedding lists up to date

  • Helps the bride get ready and with anything she needs throughout the wedding day
  • Waits for the bride at the entrance to the church, lines up her attendants and helps adjust her veil
  • Holds Brides bouquet during the ceremony
  • Walks with the best man out of the ceremony
  • Takes place in receiving line and assists best man in welcoming guests at the reception
  • Places bouquets by the wedding cake for pictures to be taken
  • Serves wedding cake to guests
  • Brings bouquet to the bride for the tradition of throwing the bouquet
  • Takes charge of wedding dress and helps bride get ready for evening reception and “going away”
  • Helps best man to transport wedding gifts to a safe place
  • Returns any hired bridal outfits for bridesmaids if necessary

    The Flower Girl:

  • Usually the youngest bridesmaid
  • Carries a basket of flowers or flower petals instead of bouquet
  • Joins in procession with other attendants
  • After the ceremony scatters petals in front of the bride and bridegrooms path as they walk back down the aisle

    The Ushers:

  • Meets with the best man before the wedding day to plan transport and duties
  • Arrive first at the ceremony venue
  • Organise parking at all venues
  • Greet guests and direct them to their seats
  • Make sure all mobile phones are off
  • Hand out orders of service and button holes and hymn books
  • Escorts mother of the bride and elderly guests to their seats
  • Holds umbrella for bridal couple in case it rains
  • Help photographer and videographers to organise group shots
  • Assists best man to sort transport for the guests
  • Check all guests are happy and attend to their needs
  • Make sure all guests are seated for the speeches
  • Greet evening guests
  • Start applauding when bride and groom have first dance then get everyone else up to dance

  • Stands first in the receiving line
  • Look after gift list and arrange display of the presents on the day
  • After the wedding sends cake to those unable to attend on the wedding day
