Cake & Confectionary
As we all know weddings are also about feasts of food!
At the reception the centre piece and focus of attention is usually
the cake. In tradition the cake holds much symbolism, and most
receptions include the ritual of cutting the cake where the couple
make the first cut together to symbolise their shared future.
This is still a significant act at many weddings today.
Although the tradition of pure iced white fruit cakes are still
popular, now a variety of food preferences, colours, frosting
and sugar craft decorations are available, including vanilla,
chocolate, lemon, raspberry, and carrot, which are all growing
in the popularity stakes.
An abundance of shapes and designs are also available, ranging
from castles over waterfalls, and personalised picture cakes to
designer cakes of every variety and size imaginable.
Although the traditional model of the Bride
and Bridegroom
still features on top of some cakes, other decorations are being
chosen including chocolate truffles, white chocolate petals, chocolate
leaves, sugar frosting and sugar craft artwork. The cake can also
reflect your chosen flowers or the lace in the bridal gown.
The decision of tradition versus a more modern approach remains
with the couple, and to satisfy tastes some couples may even have
more than one cake if budget allows!
A growing trend in the wedding cake industry is a mountain of
individual cup cakes so that lots of flavours can be featured,
including mousses, chocolate ganache, fruit cakes and fairy cakes.
In other words something for everyone!
Alongside this is a similar idea with the croquembouche; a cascade
of profiteroles brimming with cream are caramelised, creating
individual bites for the guests.
If cake isn’t your thing, or you fancy something a bit different
then why not try a chocolate fountain instead of a cake. Or if
your budget will allow you could have both! Many couples have
the cake as the centre piece on the afternoon reception and a
chocolate fountain as the centrepiece for the evening guests.
Although these are a recent idea at weddings in the United Kingdom,
chocolate fountains are growing in popularity and prove a popular
ice breaker and talking point for guests.
Featuring a never ending cascade of warm melted, milk, white
or dark chocolate flowing from a multi tiered fountain. The fountain
is served with fruit, fudge, marshmallows, sweets and profiteroles,
allowing your guests to be served by waiting staff or help themselves.
So if you like fun and you are a chocoholic, this is definitely
something to consider.
Weddings-With-Style Tips:
Don’t forget to take into account the theme of the wedding and
also seasonal influences. The baker and confectioner will help
select the shape and colours that best suit your ideas and advise
you on the size and weight of your cake which will be determined
by how many guests you have. Whatever your choice it should reflect
your personalities and be something you will both enjoy!
